Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME):
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest branches of engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. They also conduct research on all the above-mentioned specializations, they work on power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. Further, they develop power-using machines such as refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, machine tools, material handling systems, elevators and escalators, industrial production equipment, and robots used in manufacturing. In addition Mechanical engineers design tools to other engineers for their work.
Computers assist mechanical engineers by accurately and efficiently performing computations, and by permitting the modeling and simulation of new designs as well as facilitating changes to existing designs. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) are used for designing data processing and for turning the design into a product.
The course is of 4 years, divided into first year and 6 semesters each of about 6 months. At the end of 1st year and each semester, an examination is held to judge the understanding of the students in that year/semester. During the first year, the students learn Fundamentals of Computing, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Design. From second year onwards they are exposed to specialized subjects like Mechanics, Kinematics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Materials Science, etc.
To get admission into B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering under convener quota one needs to clear the entrance examination conducted by the State Government. For Management quota the General criteria are that one should be 10 + 2 passed with 50% aggregate and Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as the optional subjects.
Mechanical engineers work in various industries. One can specialize in any of the following such as energy systems; applied mechanics; automotive design; manufacturing; materials; plant engineering and maintenance; pressure vessels and piping; and heating, refrigeration, and air-conditioning systems. Emerging Technologies in Biotechnology, Materials Science and Nanotechnology are creating new job opportunities for Mechanical Engineers.
Core Companies for Mechanical Engineers:
